Our research ranges in scale from the study of how microbes develop in primitive atmospheric conditions, to how satellite data can be used to monitor and understand the atmospheres of Earth and Mars, to the search for planets outside the solar system.
History
The Bay Area Environmental Research Institute is a 501(c)(3) recognized nonprofit established in 1993, with offices at NASA Ames Research Center. The Institute is dedicated to promoting and enabling scientific research, primarily in the fields of Earth Science, Astronomy, and Astrophysics.

Dr. Bergstrom is the founder and President of the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute.  He has both a Phd and a law degree and is a member of the California Bar. Since 1992 he has guided BAER Institute from a two-person institute to its present size of over 90 employees. In 2012, he was named the Principal Investigator for the NASA Ames Research Center Cooperative Research in Earth Science and Technology (ARC-CREST), a 10 year $137 million Cooperative Agreement with four institutions (BAER Institute, California State University at Monterey Bay, University of North Dakota and University of California at Davis).  Previous to starting BAER Institute he was an Assistant Regional Counsel for the USA Environmental Protection Agency in San Francisco, CA and co-founder of a legal software company, Legisoft.
