COSmIC Facility Group to Receive NASA Honor Award

The COSmIC Facility Group at Ames Research Center will receive the NASA Honor Award for Group Achievement. The upcoming award will be presented virtually, “In recognition of the unique and exceptional contribution of the COSmIC Facility Group to NASA Astrophysics and Planetary science program advances.” The group includes members from the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute (BAERI), NASA Ames, and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Farid Salama, group lead/NASA Ames, designed and developed the Ames’ COSmIC Simulation Facility. COSmIC stands for COsmic SImulation Chamber and was developed to generate interstellar, circumstellar, and planetary analogs in the lab. In the chamber, neutral and ionized molecules, nanoparticles, and grains are studied under temperature and vacuum conditions that are required to simulate space environments.
