Kassie Perlongo (she/her)
Science Communications Specialist
I interview NASA scientists about their research then craft stories and podcasts to share with the general public and the Ames Science Directorate.
About Kassie
Where are you from, and what were you doing before BAERI?
I grew up in the Central Valley but I've lived all over California -- San Diego, Sacramento, Half Moon Bay, Fresno -- and for a short time (six years) I lived and worked overseas in England! Now I currently reside in Mountain View.
Before coming to BAERI I worked as a Managing Editor for a non-profit robotics website called Robohub. That job opened my eyes to the world of robotics and I'm forever grateful I had that opportunity. Prior to that, I worked in marketing and communications at University of Oxford as a Research Communications Officer. The common theme for all my jobs has always been storytelling and communicating with the general public in new and innovative ways.
How did you get started doing this work?
My career path is quite meandering. I have a Master of Arts in English Literature. Fun fact: I wrote my thesis about welsh mythological links in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings! I also have a Master of Science degree in Science Communication from The University of the West of England (UWE). I went back to university for the second Masters' during my time at University of Oxford. I just love learning new things!
What’s one job-related thing that you love talking about with other people?
I get to ask silly questions to scientists and discuss their research. Honestly, does it get any better than interviewing scientists that work at NASA?? What I love is seeing their personalities shine in our chats. When they are excited, I am excited. It's also important to build trust so they are happy about how their research is portrayed to the public and other scientists. The best part is hearing stories when scientists are on assignment or when they decide to pursue science as a career. It's always so inspiring. By the way, people can listen to the podcasts we've done on StoryCorp if they are curious about our science community at NASA Ames.
How about a non-job related thing?
Working out! My favorite so far is Lagree. It's basically a high intensity, low impact full body workout using a spring resistance machine. Also, hiking. We are so fortunate to have many stunning trails in Northern California.
